ANNOUNCEMENT: SUPER ART (WiP3)!

PHOTOGRAPHERS, PAINTERS, SOUND CREATORS, SCULPTORS, PLAYWRIGHTS, POETS, MOVERS, INSTALLATION ARTISTS, ACTORS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS, DANCERS, PERFORMANCE ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, COLLAGERS, CREATIVE PEOPLE WORKING IN ANY MEDIUM-

Announcing an open call for artists all of persuasions to contribute their ideas and talents to a collaborative, inter-disciplinary installation and performance series culminating at Public Space One throughout the month of October. The project will begin with a meeting in late June where interested artists will come together and discuss their own current work and interests in their field in the hopes that connections across disciplines will be made. There are no predetermined rules about who can collaborate with who or how many artists or various mediums can work together, but it will be decided early on how all of the discrete parts will come together in the shared space. The theme of the entire project will be determined by the interests and ideas contributed by the artists involved; since the installation and performance series will be occurring throughout the month of October, the projects that result from the mix of artists will be experienced as works in progress leading up to a yet undetermined end event and closing show. Artists will have from the end of June through October 1, 2011 to generate and discuss concepts, ideas, and create with each other.

This project is the brainchild of local dancemakers and PS1 and is being funded by the donations gathered by a benefit dance concert. There is $800 that artists will be able to divvy up and use for materials depending on their needs. The guiding spirit of this collaborative event is one of cooperation, exploration, and a shared desire to create works of art that cross and blend disciplines while forging a strong network of support in Iowa City’s creative community.

Featuring a story by India, Angela Stewart’s biographical essay in four voices, notes toward the perfection of the musical “Frankenteen” by Kit Bryant, Bach embroidery from Allison Welch, and translating John Berryman’s “The Dream Songs” into semaphore flag performance through the medium of Eric Asboe’s dreams.

Will Erin Smith’s stand-up routine be a triumph, or an utter failure? Will A Literal Letter Service find a new business model to focus their correspondence services on “the streamlined almost of the ever coming present”? Tanner Smith has been mapping the fictional town of TanVille for years; will David Dunlap understand his project? Filmmakers Joe Bookman and Craig Webster ask whether the WiP audience will find their movie about fishing and friendship entertaining. Joh Kirk asks us to think about female bodies, medical science, and dance as a technology of the body. Robert Todd and Lori Felker screen their high contrast correspondence film, a science non-fiction fairy tale, and wonder what comes between two filmmakers collaborating at a distance.

Naqvi.

Gillian Adler tells her idea of scripting a short film about bus romance. Lem Torrevillas screens his film-in-progress, “Sister Margo Muse of Embers,” and waits patiently for feedback. Laurel Fantauzzo reads a scene from her script-in-progress about the tragicomic life of a wounded lesbian fixie bike mechanic, while Josh Eklow discusses his pursuit of fitness, weight-loss, strength, self-defense and sports knowledge. D. Jesse Damazo makes it clear that turning people into art is easy.

Hannah Frank and Jacob Blecher want to keep making their docucartoon about birds, this time making it about Snow and Canada Geese. Matthew Klane and Colby Somerville want to remember “Being Che,” while conceptually grounded in the word “drone.” Naqeeb Stevens wants to build chairs. Adam Roberts wants to make poetry on the internet about “Jersey Shore.”

WiP 2010 closing night spectacular features performance presentations by avant-noise technology trio Wind Farm and digital graffiti by Josh Unikel. Dan Faltesek plays the energetic carnival barker, wowing visitors with his homemade 3-D technology. Flint Jamison does his best to remain inscrutable, before Iowa City’s own Les Dames du Burlesque take the stage to workshop their current spectacular-in-progress.

“Global Express” will take place on Saturday night and feature a couple of WiP artists. The event is a program of staged readings, directed by Maggie Conroy, taking place at UI Theatre Building (Theatre B).

WiP 2010 Visiting Artists

After a lifetime torn between music and drawing/painting, film sauntered into the picture in 1989 and offered ROBERT TODD’s maker innards a truce- through- shotgun- wedding that seems to have endured ever since. A lyrical filmmaker as well as a sound and visual artist, he continually produces short works that resist categorization. He has also worked as editor, sound designer, post-supervisor or music producer on various broadcast and theatrically released productions. He currently makes, collaborates and teaches in the Boston area.

LORI FELKER studied English Literature and German as an undergraduate, which then led her to study Film Studies in Berlin on a Fulbright (2000). Increasingly interested in combining her love of writing and film history with creativity and handcraft, she eventually took up filmmaking in 2001 by taking classes at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Since earning her MFA in Film Video and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she has been living, making films/videos, teaching, and compulsively collaborating in Chicago.

FLINT JAMISON is a contemporary artist whose work spans multiple genres and modes. As a digital photographer and conceptual artist, he has exhibited internationally. As a curator, he is editor-in-chief of the art journal Veneer, lauded for being a work of art unto itself. He is also founder of multiple non-profit arts organizations, and has been a visiting artist and guest lecturer at CalArts, the School of Visual Arts in Bordeaux, France, and SUNY-Buffalo.
